How much time will I spend in a classroom?
You will spend 4 hours/day in class with an experienced Spanish instructor along with 2-6 other students (private classes also available in some locations). Classes are grouped by language level as determined by a test administered on the first day. In addition to formal (yet relaxed) classes, the school also offers a series of weekly activities such as Salsa lessons, workshops, movies, city tours, and more. (back to top)
What are the classes like?
Although time is spent each day focusing on grammar and vocabulary, the focus is on speaking and listening skills. In addition to text books designed by the school, teachers use a variety of learning materials to keep the learning experience relevant, interesting, an fun. As mentioned, the groups are small, so there is no hiding in the back of the class…all students must talk a lot! (back to top)
How much will I learn?
Of course, that depends on you…how much you practice outside of class, how much homework you do, etc. However, generally speaking, in 3 weeks of language immersion classes you will cover the same amount of material as in a semester of college. Even though the amount of material is the same, it is guaranteed that you will be able to speak more Spanish after 3 weeks on a language program than after a semester in a classroom in the United States. Who are the other students?
Students range in age from 18-80 and come from countries all over the world. Some stay for 2 weeks, others for several months. The majority of students come individually, some come with friends or family, and some come in groups. The schools provide a relaxing social environment so there is ample opportunity to meet other students. (back to top)
Who are the host families?
Costs include accommodations with a local host family. All families are screened by the school and evaluated by each student that stays with them. Families provide clean accommodations, safe and tasty local cuisine, and plenty of opportunity to practice Spanish (most families do not speak English). There is a place on the registration form for you to make requests about children, pets, smokers and dietary restrictions. Host families do receive payment for hosting students. (back to top)
What happens on weekends?
There are no classes held on the weekends. The schools offer optional tours to explore the country’s treasures with other students or they can help you arrange to travel on your own. (back to top)
